EMPL delivers two-way rescue vehicle for the world’s sixth largest tram network.

Wiener Linien already have several EMPL vehicles in their fleet. To transport more than 960 million passengers every year safely, comfortably and on time, the network is backed up by a sophisticated maintenance, repair and service solution. This was recently expanded with a two-way rescue vehicle from EMPL.

The rescue vehicle with front linkage is based on a Mercedes Benz Unimog U423 4x4. To provide maintenance for the tram network with its many challenges such as curves with a radius below 20 m and extensive tunnel systems, a turntable device and a fire detection and extinguishing system are installed as special equipment. Work in the tunnel system can also be carried out during active passenger service, whereby changes from road to rail are made quick and easy with the two-way feature, which allows for precise towing of broken down vehicles.

The body is equipped with five equipment chambers with roll-up doors, folding steps at the side and rear, a ladder up to the walk-on roof, a hydraulic drum winch with 5.5 t capacity at the rear, an integrated 6 kVA generator controlled with the auxiliary drive as well as a tipper unit at the front of the vehicle, which is used as an additional equipment chamber.

The tipper unit contains 4 rack and pinion winches as well as a wheeled container with a push-on rail module for transporting the hydraulic pump with control table, a rerailing bridge, shifting units, a lifting cylinder, a step set, etc.

The entire special signalling system uses LED technology. The blue light system can be switched to orange. A signalling system with a pressure chamber loudspeaker and customer-specific tone sequence are also installed. The 7 inch colour display of the EMPL H.I.T. in the cab is provided for controlling the warning signals (acoustic or visual), the special signalling system & lighting, the cable winch and integrated generator, the operating status monitoring and the lock checks and for executing the service & diagnostic function.

The extensive contents include a 50 m power and 20 m compressed-air fast attack on self-winding, spring-loaded drums, a hose reel, battery-powered tools (impact screwdriver, drill, angle grinder, rescue cutter), a power saw, a chain saw, a handsaw, a rack lifter, battens and chocks, rerailing plates, rail scrapers, bar contact shoes, chains, shackles, tension straps, a ratchet set, a searchlight, etc.
